Soft and silky hair does not have to be something we see only on TV commercials. There are some everyday habits we can adopt so our hair would become healthier. Find out what are those small things we should do daily so every day would be a “good hair day”.
Have healthy fats in your diet
Having a well-balanced diet is important for your health but also for having good looking hair. Including foods like nuts, avocados, olives, salmon and chia seeds in your diet make sure your hair gets the healthy fats and vitamins it so desperately needs. Your body can’t make these healthy fats itself so you must get them from your food or supplements. It doesn’t mean you have to eat all of those foods every day. Go over your weekly menu and check how many of those are present on your diet.
We all know human bodies need water to operate. However, we also need water to keep our skin and hair healthy and young-looking. There are plenty of different recommendations going around how many glasses of water we should drink daily. This, however, is highly personal and also depends on our diet (don’t forget water is also found in the foods we consume). So if you have hair problems it’s worth thinking whether you are drinking enough liquids? (PS! Coffee doesn’t count!)
Do not wash your hair too often
Washing your hair every day is clearly an overkill. Over-washing can lead to flaking of the scalp and dry your hair out. Dry hair also is more likely to break. If you feel your hair is very oily it’s a good idea to review what your shampoo contains. Many shampoos contain ingredients that make your scalp produce more sebum than necessary. This means you will end up washing your hair more frequently than necessary and ultimately damaging your hair.
Avoid hair products that include chemicals
Avoid using shampoos, conditioners, and other hair products that contain chemicals that are even hard to pronounce. They might leave your hair shiny looking for some time but mostly this is just superficial. Some ingredients attach themselves on the surface of your hair making it impossible for the hair to take in moisture from the air. You can read more about some potentially harmful ingredients from here.
Use natural products that are full of nutrients your hair desperately needs
Soft and silky hair means healthy hair. Healthy means your hair gets enough healthy fats and vitamins. Don’t rely only on your diet. Pamper your hair with natural hair oils or masks that deliver nutrients deep into your hair healing them inside out. You want to have hair oils that definitely include argan oil. You can read more about why this one is especially good from here.
Do not brush or comb your hair when they are wet
This knowledge is usually given from mother to daughter from a young age. Yet somehow we often find ourselves in situations when we are in a hurry and still do it. Wet hair is weaker, fragile and more susceptible to breakage. Allow your hair to dry 80% of the way before combing. Also, go easy with the towel when drying your hair. You want to gently press the water out and avoid rough-drying.
Clean your hairbrush regularly
A dirty hairbrush is an excellent location for bacteria to start building up. It also contains dead skin cells that can transfer back to your hair each time you brush. You should clean your brush at least once a month. You can use a mixture of warm water and baking soda to get rid of all the bacteria and filth.
The above-named hacks may seem to be too easy to be true. Somehow we are convinced by commercials to think that only expensive hair products can make our hair shiny and soft. The truth, however, cannot be further from this. There is so much we can do daily to have healthy-looking hair. Do the hacks named above consistently and you’ll see the results in no time.
