Though harmless, warts are unsightly and embarrassing skin growths that have plagued human beings for ages! They can develop anywhere on your skin but usually appear on the face, legs, or the back of your hands.
In this article, we will answer commonly asked questions about warts to help you gain a better understanding of them and give you tips on how you can get rid of them for good.
What are Warts Caused By?
Warts are caused by a virus known as Human Papillomavirus (HPV). HPV enters the body via broken skin and causes the rapid growth of the top layer of the skin and this forms warts. There are more than 100 types of HPV and almost all of them cause the growth of harmless warts on your feet and hands.
However, there are a few types cause genital warts and these could raise the risk of developing cervical cancer.
What Does a Wart Look Like?
Warts vary in their shapes, textures, and sizes. It may be a bump on the skin with a rough texture or flat with a smooth texture. They resemble solid blisters or small cauliflowers. You may notice black dots in the wart; these are tiny blood vessels that lead to the core of the wart and supply it with blood.

What are the Types of Warts?
There are five main types of warts which are found on different parts of the body and they each have distinct shapes:
Common Warts
These warts typically appear on fingers, toes, knuckles, knees, or elbows although they can also be found in other places. They have a firm, raised, rough, and rounded appearance that makes them look like cauliflower. They also appear gray compared to the surrounding skin and they often have darkened small spots that are clotted blood vessels.
Plantar Warts
They usually grow on the feet and may be painful or uncomfortable especially as you walk. Unlike other types of warts that grow outward, plantar warts grow inwards because of the pressure the body exerts onto the foot. The appearance of a plantar wart is a small black dot surrounded by hardened white tissue.
Flat/Plane Warts
They are flat, round, and smooth in appearance. Their color is brown, yellow, or skin-colored. Flat warts often grow in sun-exposed areas like the face, arms, and legs. They have flat tops so they are not quickly noticeable.
Filiform Warts
These kind of warts are long and narrow in shape which makes them look like small flaps of skin. They usually grow on your eyelids, armpits, neck, chin, nose, or mouth. Sometimes, they are referred to as facial or digitate warts because of their tendency to be found on the face. They also are flesh-colored.
Periungual Warts
These are warts that grow underneath your fingernails or toenails. They may be painful and may even interfere with the growth of your nails. They first start as small growths and then grow to bumps that appear dirty. Periungual warts typically affect children or young adults, especially nail biters.
Do Warts Go Away on Their Own?
Warts usually go away without medication after a few weeks, months, or years. However, if it is at a clearly visible part of your body, is painful or comfortable, or just plain annoying, you may consider ways of getting rid of them.

Are Warts Contagious?
Yes. All types of arts can be spread in various ways:
From Person to Person
Touching a person infected with warts will not necessarily cause you to get warts. Different people react differently to HPV. Almost everyone is exposed to HPV at some point in their lives but not all get warts. It depends on how strong your immunity is.
If you touch a person with warts with a part of your body that has broken skin, you’ll be at a higher risk of contracting warts. This is why warts are common in children who often get injuries.
Genital warts are spread through sexual contact with an infected person. Fortunately, there is a vaccine against the Human Papillomavirus that causes genital warts.
From Other Body Parts
A wart on one part of your body can spread to another part of your body. This can happen when you scratch a wart and then scratch another part that is not infected. It can also happen through shaving which may scrape a wart and transfer it to another body part.
From Surfaces
Touching surfaces that an infected person touched can make you get warts. The riskiest surfaces include showers, pools, and showers.
Sharing personal effects like razors and towels also puts you at risk of
developing warts.
Can You Cut Off a Wart?
Cutting off a wart at home may not be a good idea. It may result in bleeding since some warts have blood vessels inside. If you’re not careful, you may also contract infections from the open wound.
However, a doctor is in a better position to perform electrosurgery or laser surgery to safely remove warts.
How to Get Rid of Flat Warts on Hands
Flat warts usually disappear without treatment with time but if you’re impatient, your doctor may prescribe medication to get rid of them a little faster. This may include topical creams that irritate the skin and cause it to peel, removing warts in the process.

3 Best Wart Removal Products and Remedies
Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar works the same way as the popular treatment of warts, salicylic acid, does. It helps in peeling away skin infected by warts. This remedy cannot be used on sensitive skin like the face because it burns. It also has antimicrobial properties so it will help in protection against HPV.
Mix apple cider vinegar with water in a ration of two to one. Dip a cotton ball in the solution and place it on the wart. Wrap a bandage over it and leave it on for 3-4 hours. Avoid applying it on open wounds to avoid painful burns.
Banana Peel
Bananas contain potassium which helps in fighting HPV. Rub the banana peel on the wart daily until you see positive results.
Garlic
It has been used for years to treat skin conditions like corns, keloid scars, and psoriasis because of its microbial effects. Garlic has the compound allicin which breaks down enzymes in pathogens.
Crush one clove of garlic, mix it with water, and apply the mixture on the wart. Bandage it up to give it time to act. Repeat this daily for about a month.
Pineapple Peel
Pineapple acts on warts the same way that garlic does. It has bromelain, enzymes that break down proteins. HPV contains proteins that these enzymes can act on and get rid of.
Soak the wart in pineapple juice or apply it directly daily until it disappears.
Aspirin
The main ingredient of aspirin is salicylic acid. The salicylic acid will peel away the infected skin. After some time, warts also vanish.
You can extract the salicylic acid by crushing aspirin tablets and mixing them with water. Apply the mixture on the wart before bandaging it and leaving it overnight.
Getting rid of warts is not a difficult affair. Choose the remedy that works for you and be sure to consult your doctor before trying home remedies.
